There hasn't been a second of film shot for Smallville's upcoming eighth season, but we've already been discussing the shake-ups behind the scenes for months. We've known for quite some time that Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk wouldn't be returning full-time next year, and last week we reported that Allison Mack waited until the last minute to sign on for season 8. With all of that excitement going on, it appears that another major Smallville departure got overlooked. Actress Laura Vandervoort, who plays Supergirl on the CW series, recently told TV Guide that she also won't be back as a series regular next season.

When we last saw Supergirl, she had been trapped in the Phantom Zone by the evil Brainiac. According to Vandervoort, the decision to leave her character languishing in the otherworldly prison came as a bit of a shock to the cast. "We were all surprised when they chose not to bring me back as a regular," she said, "but I'm sure I'll be back for one or two [episodes]!"

Though having time away from the series will allow Vandervoort to work on new projects, she admits to being proud of her stint as Clark's (Tom Welling) cousin. "The show is about Clark Kent, and I was honored to be a part of it," she said. "I mean, my character became more than it was supposed to be. She ended up sticking around the entire season."

There have long been rumors of a possible Supergirl spin-off series, but for now Vandervoort has moved on to film work. She's currently in Hawaii shooting the direct-to-DVD Into the Blue 2, which is a sequel to the movie that featured Paul Walker and Jessica Alba in skimpy bathing suits. Vandervoort will star alongside Chris Carmack (The O.C.), Marsha Thomason (Lost), and David Anders (Heroes) in the follow-up. If it's long been your dream to see Supergirl in a bikini, keep checking the shelves of your local video store.

Will Smallville be the same without Kara around to get in on the action? We'll find out when the series returns later this year.

Im completely fine with her not coming back. I was really looking forward to the supergirl story line, when I heard about it last year. Unfortunately it totally sucked. By far, this was the weakest season of Smallville. Its a shame it had to be the season where both Lex and Lana were leaving.

I guess I'll be watching Blue 2 now.

I'm ok with Kara not coming back as well, I think she took too much screen time from Clark.

No she didn't. Something was always happening to Kara in Season 7 so we hardly even saw her at all.

See, I would love it if they just gave Kara a show of her own! She's a great actress, and has the back story already.

I don't think Kara could hold her own really. I mean, just look at how the movie did. I think she's better as a supporting character with Clark.

I agree sir. Although she is a fantastic actress, it's hard for me to see her as a main character. But you never know, I thought she was going to be a stupid character when I first heard she was coming on the show, and that opinion changed.
