All right guys I have an actual trivia question for you. well its not really quizzing you guys its more of a question. Why in the first Superman movie did they decide to go with the ice planet look for Krypton? In the comics before it had theyre been a depiction of Krypton as an ice planet?

I don’t know why they decided to do that. Maybe it was an aesthetic choice by the art department. I think maybe because Krypton did not have a yellow sun, it made sense to Donner and crew that Krypton would be an ice planet as Pluto is freezing and it does not have a yellow sun orbiting it, I don’t know.

But Krypton was depicted as a futuristic earth in most comics, but in the Superman movies they decided to go with the whole ice planet thing. Kind of give it refreshed origins.

I don't think it was necessarily supposed to be ice. Keep in mind that the set up Donner chose was a lot of story based on the crystals and how they played an integral role in Kryptonian society. As such it's likely that most of what you were seeing was large crystaline structures and not ice. That was what I always imagined given all the ties to the various crystals/minerals.

Donner said that they wanted Krypton to look like the inside of a crystal. Because of the comparisons they were intentionally drawing with Superman and Christ, they wanted Krypton to have a Heavenly/Home of the gods type feel. That's why they spoke with such formal English to one another. Tom Mankewietz (Sp?) said he wanted it to be almost Shakespearian.
